We genuinely love IKEA Söderhamn couch

Deep, loungey, modern seating with replaceable and washable covers. Deep and wide enough that people can sleep on it comfortably. We’ve had it for 6 years and still love it so much.

So let me start by defending the original IKEA couch cover, because it deserves it. The IKEA Fridtuna in white held up beautifully for years. It was pretty, it washed well, it looked clean and bright — genuinely great cover. And then Miumiu arrived.

Miumiu joined our household at the beginning of last year and spent the next few months slowly, methodically dismantling the armrests. By the time we admitted what was happening, the cover was pretty worn out. We lived with it like that for another couple of months, covering the worst spots with blankets, which is a very elegant solution that I do not recommend long-term. Eventually I hit a wall and decided I wanted a clean, fresh start — and if I was replacing it anyway, I wanted something that could actually survive our cat.

Are there custom anti scratch Söderhamn covers made for homes with cats?

Yes, and you have to go to Etsy to find them. I found PetbitatStudio on Etsy — they specialize in custom IKEA slipcovers in a huge range of fabrics, including a scratch-resistant option that’s specifically made for cat households. That’s what got me there in the first place.

Cherry on top: they send swatches. I ordered a few in different neutral tones, felt them in person when they arrived (about a week to ten days shipping), and that’s how I landed on the color I ended up with — this beige oat tone with a slightly warm undertone. Nothing stark, nothing cold. Just soft and grounding.

I went with their claw-proof linen-look fabric in color CP501. Placed the order for my Söderhamn pieces after that, and the covers were made fresh and delivered within a month.

What does claw-proof fabric actually feel and look like?

Okay, this is the part I’m still so so excited about. They look like linen but feel like a lightweight velvet. That combination should not work as well as it does. It’s soft in a way that makes people want to touch it — multiple guests have commented on it, and more than one has fallen asleep on the couch, which I’m choosing to take as the highest possible compliment.

As for Miumiu: he tried. He went at the armrest once, the fabric didn’t give him the same satisfying feedback he used to get, and he has largely lost interest since. That’s the win. I will take it.

The one thing to know: it’s light-colored, so it will need washing occasionally. But I washed it before I even put it on (highly recommend), and the covers handled it perfectly. At least now I know the process is doable.

How hard is it to swap the covers on a Söderhamn?

Here’s what I wish someone had told me: the Söderhamn requires you to fully disassemble each section before you can swap the covers. I forgot about this going in. I started alone, no tools, full confidence, and after an hour I had to ask my husband to come help. The extra pair of hands and muscles really help in this case.

Total time: just over two hours. Whew! It was genuinely a workout. Next time I’ll definitely ask him to help from the start.

The result though? Every guest who’s come over has noticed. My parents spotted it on a video call. The feedback has been consistently great, and honestly, just walking into my own living room feels different now. Same couch, completely different energy.

The blanket-on-the-armrest era is officially over. Yay!

The Full Cost Breakdown

Swatches (x8) were $7 and these custom IKEA couch covers were $474 including tax. Less than $500 in total. I’d say it’s worth it!
