I Swapped My Kitchen Cabinet Hardware and Now My Kitchen Finally Feels Like Mine
Okay I have to tell you about this because I am still not over it.
I made myself a matcha latte, put on my indie folk playlist, and spent one hour — one hour — swapping out my kitchen cabinet hareware. And now I walk in there and genuinely smile. Three years of living with handles I didn’t get to choose, and it took me one afternoon to fix it. I’m a little annoyed it took me this long but mostly I’m just obsessed with the result.

The Backstory (Aka: Builder Grade Silver, We Are So Done)
New build problems: a lot of decisions get made for you before you even move in. Ours came with builder grade matte silver bar pulls throughout the entire kitchen. Fine. Totally fine. The kind of fine where you don’t hate them but you also didn’t choose them and every time you open a cabinet you’re mildly aware of that fact.
I always knew I wanted bronzed hardware — something warm and detailed that adds character against our white cabinets. Or matte black if I was going more modern. But we moved in, life happened, and somehow three years passed with the same silver handles just existing in my kitchen.
I’m in full house refresh mode now and this was so overdue. I cannot believe I waited this long for a one hour project.
Wait — Before You Buy Anything, Measure This
Okay so this is the one thing I really want you to know before you go down the shopping rabbit hole because I wish someone had led with this for me.
Center-to-center distance. It’s the measurement between the middle of one screw hole to the middle of the other on your cabinet doors. This is what determines whether new hardware fits your existing holes — meaning no drilling, no patching, no extra steps. You just swap and go.
Mine was 3 inches which is pretty standard for new builds, but measure yours before you order anything. Grab a tape measure, takes 30 seconds, saves you from returning an entire order. You’re welcome.
The Shopping Rabbit Hole I Fully Fell Into
So I got my measurement, opened my laptop, and immediately lost an hour on Anthropologie and Etsy. Have you seen the hardware on those sites?? I was so excited. I was picking out these sculptural, one-of-a-kind pulls that would make my kitchen the most interesting kitchen anyone had ever seen.
And then I counted my handles.
Thirty-seven. I have thirty-seven cabinet handles in my kitchen. I genuinely did not know this until I counted. I thought maybe 20, 25 max. Thirty-seven.
Here’s the thing — super unique statement hardware is incredible in small doses. Like, I am absolutely doing something fun and wild in my bathroom where I have maybe 4 handles. That’s the place for the Anthropologie pull that looks like a tiny sculpture. But 37 of the same bold handle across an entire kitchen? It starts to get visually noisy really fast. I had to calm myself down a little.
I always ask myself when I’m shopping for the house: is this design me? And yes, detailed and characterful hardware is very me — I just needed to find the version of that which worked at kitchen scale.
What I Actually Went With
I landed on the Hestia New Collection Embossed Novelty Pull in oil rubbed bronze and I am so happy with this decision. It has warmth, it has detail, it has that elevated feeling I wanted — without being so loud that 37 of them overwhelms the whole room. Against the white cabinets it looks so good. Like the kitchen always should have looked like this.
Although these were not the cheapest option I could find, I wanted something solid and premium (you can genuinely feel the difference between these and the hollow cheaper ones when you hold them). The full investment was around $170 for all 37.

The Actual Swap: So Easy It’s Almost Embarrassing
I blocked out a whole afternoon for these kitchen cabinet hardware. It took one hour.
I purposely used a manual IKEA screwdriver instead of my power drill — with 37 handles I just didn’t want to risk over-drilling or angling something wrong on a cabinet door. The screwdriver kept me in control of every screw and honestly it was kind of meditative? Matcha latte on the counter, good music on, just me and my 37 handles. I had such a good time.
The process is literally: unscrew old handle from the inside of the door, line up new handle over the same holes, screw in from the inside. That’s it. Do it 37 times. Walk around your kitchen feeling like you remodeled.
